Speculation : Increased tow ratings?
With the diesel and also the pickup planned on the same platform, here's hoping that the tow rating is increased for the JL.
...understanding the 2-door might still be limited to 2000 lbs because of the short wheel base.
...but the 4-door is closer the Grand Cherokee, so it seems like a higher rating is possible. Particularly if FCA is planning a truck version. (A truck that can only tow 3500 lbs? No.)

The tow rating is a mystery with several plausible theories as to why it is so low. One that has some validity is that the doors and top do not protect the occupants. It's a convertible. So, as long as the doors and too come off, I expect the tow rating will stay artificially low.

Actually from what we've seen so far the tow ratings are less.
According to the new JL OM:
2 door = 2,000 (down from 3500 on 3.73+)
4 door = 3,500 (same but GCWR and frontal area has decreased)
Snip from the 2016 manual:
