Thanks!

With a few hours and a lot of work and appling filters, you can come close to these. But it just won't be the same. You are still limited to the light range the camera picked up on that photo. When you take an HDR, you take 5 pictures at different shutter speeds to capture the full light range, then blend those together and apply a few filters and tone mapping.

with about 15 minutes, 5 pictures, a few button presses on an HDR program, and you are done.

and keep in mind, i'm still new at this. the 3 i just posted are the 12, 13, and 14th ones i've done EVER.

here's a few real HDRs from a few pros...

Well... there's two I use, and neither is free. The first one and the one I use primarily, now that I found it, is PhotoMatrix 3.0. Its not badly priced, only $100. It does have a free period to it to try it out. The other program I use to use, but found it is lacking in ability (to much of my surprise) is the built in HDR generator in Photoshop CS3.

I haven't found any program that was free that could do much with HDR. And everyone one of them had a "basic" version that was free with a few bells on it, and then an "advanced" version of the same program with a lot of bells, and whistles on it that would cost a few bucks. I finally found the PhotoMatrix one after it was recommended to me by another photographer.

I've been wanting to get the software you need to do good HDR. You can do HDR without it, but from what I've seen you gotta get a few things to do real good HDR. If you want to see an example of amazing HDR, I recommend checking out stuckincustoms.
