Thinking of getting the wife a new camcorder....thoughts on type/models
We are new to off roading and we want to do a mix of mild off roading and expedition travel. I am thinking of getting my wife a camcorder for Christmas (this will be her first camcorder) and I am looking at all the various models and options. I want to get her one that will take decent video without breaking the bank. I've been looking at different manufacturers and Sony's seems to be one of the more highly recommended. I am looking at the Sony HDR XR160 model (both user reviews and tech journals/consumer reports give this model good ratings) but I'm a little concerned that it has a hard drive instead of the flash memory. While we don't plan on any drastic off roading, we do want to do some mild trails. Has anyone had any experience with camcorders that have built in hard drives? If so, how did the drives hold up to the pounding of off roading?

My suggestion if you are going to use it offroad go with the Go Pro hero or hero2, they have mounts to mount them on any surface so you dont have to hold them the whole time and the come with a waterproof case. good luck on finding one

thanks for the quick reply. I just took a look at the Hero2 and it does look pretty nice (I really like the price range) but the size and shape would pretty much limit the "daily" non-driving uses. This might be something we look at later to have a camcorder "dedicated" to off roading

I am hoping that I can find an good "multi purpose" camcorder which would allow her to use it inside (family events and such) as well as out on both the trails or at the "tour-isty" locations

use to have a canon vixia series with flash memory... it took unbelievable video. I would definitely recommend flash over harddisk, its lighter for one and I don't know about models now, but I'd run out of battery before I ran out of space in HD 1080p. ...atleast until I bought the extended battery.

Are you against going with a Nikon or Canon DSLR? You can have the best of both worlds. You have an excellent camera as well as a 1080 camcorder when needed. They are very simple to use or learn and the investment will benefit you in 2 ways. That's just my my .02.
I have a Nikon D7000 but I used to shoot Canon. Both are very solid and the entry levels are excellent instruments.
