Default Moab tips for a newbie

I'll be traveling out west this summer (driving to San Francisco,) and I thought I might as well stop by Moab while I'm out there with the Jeep. The thing is, I doubt we will have much time in Moab, since we'll just be passing through. We may stay there for a day at the most, so time isn't exactly abundant.

Anyway, is it worth checking out if we only have about one day to spend there? Is it pretty easy to find trails? Would it be possible to drive into Moab, do a trail or two (or three) and drive out? How close are trails to the main highway? My JK is mostly stock, so easy to moderate trails would be best.

Any advice about Moab would be appreciated.

Are there some off-road trails in Arches that are decent?

That might be good. I'm not looking for anything extreme. Just a little something for beginners, but not something you could pull-off in a minivan. Scenery is good too. Thanks for the help!

The Arches trail is great for a beginner/stocker. If you get out there and do not know where to go, I suggest going to one of the rental places and getting one of their maps. The rentals do not allow their jeeps on the extreme trails and their maps are pretty good. Plus you might be able to find a few of the renters willing to go with you. If you can not find a buddy go to a gas station and look for other Jeepers.

Its basically a long...like 3-5 miles gravel road that exits the park. It is on the park map. Did it in a 4WD full size van in October with no problems.

There is also a 4x4 trail by the parking lot for Delicate Arch..

Arches NP is HIGHLY recommended

And great eats @ Zax Pizza downtown Moab.

If you only have one day, spend it at Arches.

Once you've been there you'll be planning for your trip back.

Going to visit Arches seems like the best thing to do with the amount of time you have but I suggest at some point in the future you get this book: http://www.funtreks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1&pro duct_tab=pages#tabs

This is the most detailed and comprehensive book on Moab 4x4 trails that I've seen. The trails range from graded dirt roads to serious rock crawling. The best part is they include very detailed maps and directions as well as color pictures of main features along each trail. It will make you want to plan an entire trip just exploring Moab.

I agree arches is a must. You could also consider doing Fin's N Things...its close to town, easy, and I don't think it is very long. It's near the slick rock bike trail, Hell's revenge and the infamous Potato Salad Hill. A common meeting place for other off-roaders is the city market...you can usually find a few people there on Saturday and Sunday mornings getting ready to head out on trails. Have fun!

I'll give you the tip my father gave me. Keep your tires down and your top up. Whatever else you do have fun.
