Default Water resistant air cleaner intake mod - PINK SPEEDO!

So I've been thinking for a while now about a simple way to make my OEM air intake more resistant to water splashes. Especially after seeing first hand how just blasting through a 1' puddle can cause the water to splash into the OEM air box and cause vapor lock. (something I always enjoyed doing with my KJ when playing around).

So I was looking at my kids "swim shirts." If you don't know, these are sunproof and water resistant shirts that they wear to the beach. I saw the cutest little one on the sale rack at the drug store so I bought it to experiement with. HOT PINK on black, of course!

I put the shirt over a cup and ran water over the top of it in my sink. Wouldn't ya know it, the cup was DRY inside!!! SON OF A GUN!

So I took the cute little shirt out to my JK (I would swear my JK started to back away from me as I approached with the shirt ). I put the shirt over the inlet for the air box and secured it with a rubber band. then I trimmed away the excess.

VIOLA!

instant splash guard!

Now, while I did breath through the shirt wtih my mouth to see how it affected air flow, I certainly have no intention of "wearing" this shirt all the time. But when I get to the trails, I think the reduced air intake, if any, will be a small price to pay for the added protection against vapor lock. I keep the shirt (and excess material) with rubber bands, in my glove box.

Now if I can just remember to put it on before I do anything stupid I'll be all set!

Pink Speedo for my JK!

I'm no engine mechanic and don't know the effects of restricted air ? But if it is only a small price, then this is completely genius

It will be interesting to see how it works for you under various conditions.

I idea is good, but I think the amount of air it would restrict would be more than you would think......

Definitely want to hear how this works out. I love the fact that you you proudly went for the pink and black.

hehehe. Yes, I had the choice of pink on black or something boring.

I think for just trail riding, and only wet trail riding, the airflow retriction (if any) will be neglible. Keep in mind, I don't intend to run it on the street like this. Also, before I installed it I put it over my mouth and breathed through it and literally didn't notice ANY restriction. Can't be any worse than the average driver who never changes their air filter!

Plus, it'll act like a pre-filter when in the sand/dust/dirt! Maybe it'll help

I've used foam lawn mower air filter elements before. Keeps a 'rush' of water out, helps disperse whatever water gets on it.
