Default Dead in the water

So. I think my alternator blew up. There was a loud whine and rattle sound then the battery light came on. We made it to our destination and then all the gauge lights went out and headlights turned off. It went dead in the parking lot. Smelled like burning wires. Completely dead. A battery jump barely got it running enough to put the gear in N for the tow truck.
Any thoughts? I towed it to a local shop for examination.

By intake do you mean alternator venting? Yeah water may have gotten in there. Went through some water a few weeks back. Nothing too crazy but it is a possibility.

if the alternator refuses to alternate then you are forced to use alternate transportation..

sounds like you have a bad alternator.. a battery jump doesnt charge the battery up unless you leave the cables on a long time.. so having just enough power to disengage the trans isnt necessarily abnormal..
