The zipper is very often a PITA. Here are my tips for the rear zipper:
  • Unless you are taking it off completely to take the top off, just raise both sides to just under the corners and flip it up so it rests on the roof. This way, you don't have to fight the zipper around the tricky corners.
  • To zip up and around a corner, stand on the bumper so you're leverage is above the zipper. This helps a lot.
  • To zip down and around a corner, grab the top corner of the soft top and pull it down towards you as you zip-- if you need a little more help, bounce the corner up and down.
  • LUBE that baby! If you have some time, run a dry bar of soap up and down all of the zipper teeth and then brush it all down with a wet toothbrush. In a pinch, use a wetnap along the teeth.

Of course, once you've really screwed up the teeth, these tips aren't going to help as much.

I have done this at least twice. Mine did zip off, but it took a bit of brute force. I got the jammed zipper off for my friends tj in the same fashion. I used the pull tab and pushed the zipper glide (or whatever the moving part is called) from above with my other hand.

I Figured I had nothing to lose, and it worked.

I think I've damaged something along the starting point for my back window zipper. It seems like it tends to allow about a 5 tooth mismatch. I think this is what causes the jamming when zipping the two apart.

So now I pay attention when first getting the zipper started, making sure the two steel pieces are more or less aligned.

Thanks for the wetnap tip Doojer, I never thought of trying that. I have noticed the zipper moves easier after the jeeps been cleaned.

I also zip unzip and flip the window when I can. I like to zip past the corners though, it takes all the bend out of the fipping the zipper acts much more like a hinge with nothing but the straight run left.

What makes mine awkward to zip is both halves of the zipper have a sine wave pattern and they are not in sync with each other. So the window passes in and out of plane with the soft top side.

All this typing makes this sound worse than it is. It's really just a case of could be better. Anyone who's owned a cheap sleeping bag has probably experienced alot of the same issues.

That's exactly what mine did, then one side was about 2" higher than the other side...uneven. It Took a lot of work and ultimately a lot of force to get it unhooked. In the process, the teeth got ruined.

I have the hard top on now. The dealer said I must have the soft top on the Jeep for them to look at it for warranty. I hope to install it at the end of March. I live in Colorado, it's a little cold still. It's warming up...about 35 degrees right now, above freezing so I am going to wash it now.

The highlight of my day.
