I do like the retro look, I had a Comanche that I loved. That being said. I think they should have made the Gladiator look different then just a Wrangler with a bed slapped on it.
It kinda looks like an after thought. Then they could have made a 2 door and a 4 door and had the mid-size market locked up. My 2 cents.

Think the Jeep community is big enough that they could have justified a two-door, for sure. The proportions are just so much better.
