Default Aftermarket Bumpers & Airbags

I am looking to get an aftermarket bumper, is there a way to disable the airbag if I go wheeling? Heck, does the airbag even work with an aftermarket bumper...I was looking at the rampage bumper, just wanted to know before I started pulling stuff off and blew up my steering wheel....

Most aftermarket bumpers are 1/8 to 3/16 steel. You will have to hit something pretty good to get the air bag to go off when you are off road. I would not recommend tearing apart your steering wheel to disable airbags. I wouldn't worry about the airbags.

Your airbag sensors are attached to your seat and not your bumper. So put what ever bumper you like as it won't affect your airbag.

This is a great question. I'm not worried about them going off while I'm offroading, but I would like to have them in case of a head on collision on road. The mopar offroad bumper says it will not affect them but is it the only bumper with crash cans?

Thanks
Rob

I think UVAVI8R was refering to the front air bag sensors not the side seat-mounted air bags.

ARB and AEV let you move the crush cans from the stock bumper and are called air bag compatible. That means they won't go off in low speed collisions cuz the crush cans reduce the impact shock.

This is true, but has anyone ever heard of an airbag going off in a JK when just wheeling? I haven't. Mine don't. Crush cans long gone and I've smacked the front bumper into rocks pretty hard.

Wouldn't worry about it.

you can replace the bumper without any concern as there are no sensors up there they're inside. If you want to disable them when wheelin, pull the fuse i do. Air bags are expensive and i would hate for some stupid off road incident to blow them off. We set one off at the shop and it was like a shot gun went off, follwed by the worst smell and the possibility of getting chemical burns but hey your alive
