Umm, what?

More answers from the good ole faq...

Q: On the road, what PSI should I be running in my tires?
A: For optimal comfort and even tire wear. you should not run the recommended PSI listed on the sidewalls of your tires. Typically this will be way too much. On average for a 33" tire, I would recommend that you run your tires at approximately 28-30 PSI. For a 35" tire, I would recommend running approximately 26-28 PSI. For a 37" tire, I would recommend approximately 24-26 PSI.

it's really easy to get a good idea where you wanna be, check your sidewall for maximum load at max psi...I'll bet noone here is running anywhere near max load for any of the MT's if they were at max psi...so, take that max load number and multiply it by 4 (you know, 4 tires) divide the weight of your JK with that number and you'll get a percentage...that's roughly the percent of max PSI you should run your tires at....then run the chalk test if ya wanna be sure

How is the ride at 40psi? I'd bet it is very stiff, probably even wanders a bit, right?

Those are load range E tires. They are made with stiff/thick sidewalls for the purpose of hauling heavy loads. To get any kind of a decent ride, you'll need to let some air out.

I'd drop down to at least 30psi and compare the ride. Then run the chalk test a few times and see how much lower you need to go to get the best footprint.

Or stay high, wear down the centers of the tires, and replace with 37's...

As far as the tailgate goes. From what little I've read about it, it seems like only a matter of time before you'll damage the gate. The heavier the tire, and the more off-roading and bouncing around, the more likely the damage is. Should work for you until you get around to a bumper/carrier.
