Default Installing Differential Skids Heads Up - Prepare for Leaks

Nothing against the parts that I got (although I did have to enlarge 2 holes), but I wasn't expecting to do 2 differential fluid changes this weekend after installing them. I installed them Friday for my wheeling trip Saturday and I had slow leaks. The rear was leaking a drop every 2 minutes and the front was leaking several drops overnight. I kept checking and tightening, but could only improve the rear by a little. So, I opened them both up and did a full change, My Jeep is new with only 5k miles, so it was a bit early.

Just something to be ready for if you remove 5 differential bolts....

what did you use to seal them? you can get lube lockers from northridge, and they are reuseable

I would use some hi temp RTV and let it "skin over" install the diff cover loosely " just enough to squeeze the RTV out", let it dry like that over night, in the morning tighten it to spec and fill her up.

I could be wrong, but it seems he took the bolts out on the bottom and installed the skid thereby loosening the cover enough to break the seal then trying to tighten the bolts up to keep it from leaking, could be wrong though, but that's what it seems.

I sealed it up with Blue RTV. I only let it set for 5 minutes and then installed it and filled it up (x2). I was up on stands trying to get each side a little higher so I could maximize the gear oil I could get in. I still ended up 1/3 qt short of spec, even after plugging the bottom 1/2 of the hole with my thumb as I tried to squeeze in a little extra and quick put the plug in.

Hopefully it will hold. I'll find out tomorrow. I had no time to order and wait on lubelockers. Maybe I'll get them for the next time. Sounds like a good idea, especially if I am banging the skids around.

I did front/rear diff skids a few weeks ago and no leaks...but I completely removed the covers and cleaned out the gears then reinstalled with new RTV and put the skids on...I think in the instructions it said if you just loosen the bottom 5 you may get leaks...

I have only had it out for a couple more offroad sessions and the front is back to leaking again. I ordered up some Lubelocker gaskets from QT, so I hope to change it this weekend again since they are usually quick to ship stuff.
