Can't afford gears
what are my other options for getting a better crawl ratio with out swaping out my Ring and Pinion gears?
transfer case? 4:1?
lets hear it, with approximate prices please
thanks guys and gals!

what i was thinking was a rubicon transfer case. anyone know how much a junker would charge for one of those?
the nice thing about doing the bolt on stuff is i can do it and not have to pay for the labour. i was quoted 2000 CND for parts and labour, but when i eventually go with lockers i'll have to pay that labour again

If you don't care about ALWAYS having better gearing ... and only want it in 4-low ... then a used Rubi transfer case that you can install yourself would probably be cheaper. I'd rather spend a couple of extra $$$ and have the advantage of better gearing in 2H/4H/4L ....
my fuel milage is great right now on the highway, so i would like to keep it this way!
i'mm gonna look around the scrappers and see if i can find anything before i make my decision.
i was just wondering what other ave. i could look into beofre i jump on anything

Sorry planman but ................ that's not possible. If you drive 12,000 miles per year and get only 16 mpg you use about 750 gallons per year. At 2.59 per gallon you'll spend about $1,943 per year in gas. If you gained 2 mpg with the gears, you drop down to 666 gallons a year and at the same 2.59 per gallon you'll spen 1,725 per year. With that you save - $220 per year. At that rate it will take 7 years to recoup the money. You would have to drive over 75,000 per year (leaving no time for wheeling) to recoup that money in one year and over 36,000 per year for two years. If he wants to regear the reason is never going to be that it will pay for itself. There are almost no modifications you can do to a vehicle that will actually pay for itself. Do it because you want to.............. and kiss the money goodby.

You'll see a lot of posts with mpg figures in the low teens with stock gears and bigger tires, that go on to state a 5-6 mpg gain with the new gears.
For myself, with an auto on 34's and going from 3.73's to 5.13's, I picked up 3 mpg. If I had started with 3.21's and 35's, I could easily see a larger mpg difference before/after regear.

Ya beat me too it Planman...

I had a 4-6 mpg increase.
With my 6 speed and 5.13s:
I went from about 12 around town to about 16 mpg. (If I drive less aggressively, I get about 18 mpg in town).
12k in town miles a year improves from 1000 gallons at 12 mpg to 750 gallons at 16 mpg.
At $2.59 a gallon, that would be $1295 over 2 years.
At 60 mph, I went from 15 to 20 mpg.
12k highway miles a year at 60 mph improves from 800 gallons to 600 gallons.
At $2.59 a gallon, that would be $1036 over 2 years.
Gas has been higher than $2.59, and some people do more than 12k miles a year. At last year's gas prices, the break even is less than 2 years.
