Default Superchips 93 Octane Tune!!! -or- Why's Superchips make an 87 tune?

I "installed" a Superchips programmer last week, in preparation of a lift and bigger tires, and put on the 87 tune. I have a 6-speed and realize that it won't benefit from the shift point alterations or whatever voodoo this thing can do for them. I really didn't expect much of a difference without a graph from a dyno. It only felt better at WOT with the 87 tune.

I started to regret going with one of the more expensive options just to recalibrate the speedo for bigger tires.

Until...

...I thought I might want a bit more power until I can afford a regear. So when that fateful gas light came on on that fateful night, I stopped by that fateful Exxon and signed away my first born for a tank full of 93. Now, I can feel the difference from 2500 RPM and it seems a lot smoother all around like the engine is happier. The roll-on throttle in 2nd,3rd, and 4th is much improved and I'm willing to pay the extra change for premium.

Bottom Line:
----------------

If you have a Superchips, get the 93 octane.

If you don't... I'd recommend it, but I haven't personally tried anything else... on my Jeep. "Installation" was easy and it just took a bit of fiddling with software and it being connected or not before the program was on to get it to update off of the internet. I really blame that on Windows though as the time it takes to pull it's head out of it's ass to recognize any USB device and do it's thing to "install" it is wee-todd-id.

Thanks for that post. Just upped the wife's JK tires to 285s with no plans for a lift or gears in the foreseeable future. Will try this to get some more power for city/highway driving.

So are you saying you notice the change after 2500 RPM or up to 2500 RPM

x2 91 Tune seems to be the best of both worlds between improvements and cost of gas. 87 Tune doesn't seem to do much, and 93 Tune doesn't seem much of an improvement over 91. But the difference between 87 and 91 is huge. IMO. Maybe it is just from running the higher octane fuel, but I am sticking with the 91 Tune.

sorry if this is a dumb question but isn't 93 octane only worthwhile if you're running a high-compression engine? I've heard stories of running into pinging and plug problems in switching from 87 to 93. any thoughts?

I'll agree with the other posters. The 91 tune seems to be the money tune. I had been running the 93 for a while and decided I would try the 91. I actually felt like I had a little more power with it! I won't be changing it anytime soon

the 93 tune is kick ass but my gas mileage really sucks when I run it and it seems to make my engine run really rich as evidenced by a lot of black soot around the end of my tail pipe.

I run 91 octane to get away from all of the ethanol in the gas here. With 10% ethanol you are going to have roughly a 3% decrease in your mileage per gallon. I know it is small but every little bit helps right?

As far as I know, people go to the higher octane to get AWAY from pining or pre-ignition.

If I understand it correctly..

People run into problems with pinging and knocking because thier octane rating is to LOW not to hight.

93 octane is to rich for most factory tuned engine and not all of the fuel is burned during combustion.

The Superchips retunes the engine to compensate for this increase in octane and burn all of the fuel by adjusting timing and fuel/air mixture.
