There is no way I'd ever pay a dealer to change gears! I bet you could get lockers and a gear swap for what they would charge you.

Dealers in my area will charge $140 an hour plus about a 80% markup on parts, you would be looking at $2k plus minimum. You are much better off finding a reputable mechanic to do it.

I would consider 4.10's with 33" tires. I have drove a rubi with 33" tires with a automatic and it drove great. IMO

I wouldn't pay just to go to 3.73s. If you increase your tire size, you'll just want to change again--that'll probably be a grand or two down the drain (with the dealer, closer to two I'd guess). As for finding a good shop: I'll be surprised if someone familiar with your locale doesn't offer up a suggestion in this thread. If that happens, got into the region forum and start a thread titled: "What's a Good Four Wheel Shop in Maryland?"

BTW: Regarding the carrier, there has been some discussion about when/whether that needs to be changed. I haven't paid much attention to the details, but apparently some of the comments about when that change is needed are based on incorrect info. So, before taking that as gospel, maybe check around a little more.

First, do NOT let a dealer do it unless you like getting ripped off.

Second, go to 4.10's. The 3.73's will be an certain improvement, but not worth the cost.

Save your coin, purchase 4.10-4.88 gears and lockers, have them installed by a reputable shop. Done.

To make a long story short. My dealer installed 4:10 gears in my JK. Said if I paid the whole bill it would have been $1400. They charged my $700 for the install. That price included the gears. I would go at least 4:10's. I think you will be happier.

If you have the Powertrain Lifetime Warranty having the dealer do the work would probably preserve the warranty, unless the dealer specifically states this warranty will be void for the gears.
