I know steel wheels are cheap and do well in the rocks..I have soft 8s...but what aluminum wheels are guys running for hardcore rock crawling? I see Walker Evans are popular,but what other options are out there??

 

There are those that have the big heavy ring to protect the rim, I think Walker Evans are like those.
Also people will often run a narrower rim so there is more tire sticking out to protect the rim from rocks, and it pinches the bead a bit more, so it's a poor man's rimlock.

 

I guess you have some extra cash laying around

You looking for some bling or just trying to get a lighter easier to balance wheel.

Never said im buying anything yet!! Just doing some thinking, NO BLING HERE!! Not sure where im going yet on my tie rod,did talk to Stang though,he went the opposite of you. Shouldn't you be cooking lunch for your wife about now?

Still have the same question, what do you hope to accomplish? I know the soft 8s are heavy and can suck to balance, are you just looking for normal wheels or beadlocks?

I know you saw the 37s and Spyderlocks on Lawndarts LJ, thoses things are sweet.

IF I pulled the trigger I would be after a little of everything. Weight savings,looks(not bling) and ease of balance. Also not having to rattle can would be nice. But like I said,this is a brainstorm...got many other things right now that are more important then switching out wheels!

 

If you want to protect alloy wheels from rock rash just make them as small as possible and the rubber around them as large as possible.

Definitely stay away from rims larger than 17" and keep them on the narrow side of the recommended rim width range for your tires.

Are you just trying to reduce wheel weight?

 

I love my AEV pintler rims... they do well with rocks. They protect the valve stem and lug nuts from getting busted off, which is really nice. They do show rock rash though (at least my argent's do. The silver ones may not be so bad) especially around the valve stem protector and outer lip (considering that's what gets grinded on the most).
My finish is pretty scratched up, but it still looks good, and the wheels did their job. The rocks ate the valve stem covers (cracked them and they fell off), but the actual stems are just fine.
