Default Gear Ratio vs. Stock Tires and eventually 33's

Hey guys, gotta question I'm seeking advice on. Got a New 09 JK back in October. Stock tires now have 13,000 miles on them with a good amount of tread left on them (as I am rotating all tires)

Getting a pretty big tax return check and thinking of upgrading my Gear Ratio. Here's my question(s)

I am either looking at 4.88 or 5.13's.

I am going to upgrade to 33x12.5R17 tires when my stock 17's wear out.

What would ya'll recommend? Should I wait until I've upgraded my tires to the 33's before regearing? I want a good amount of power, MPG isnt that much of an issue but still needs to be considered (my company pays for my gas).

I am leaning for the "big the better" kind of feel, but I know that the 4.88's will probably be better in the long run but worried about what 5.13's would do with the stock tires on it until I upgrade to 33's. I dunno. Any advice?

I honestly want to be able to slam on the gas and really get that RAWR haul ass power.

Thanks for your advice!

Is it an auto or manual?

For the Auto, I personally would not go more than 4.88 if you are sticking with 33s. If you go 35s you will want the 5.13s. The 5.13s would give you fairly high rpm at highway speeds if you stay with 33s.

I don't know about the manual, what others would recommend.

With a manual tranny I would think 4.10 would be plenty for 33" tires

Some of your answers are in the FAQ gear chart.

The popular (not unanimous) consensus is that 5.13s are a very good match for 35s with the auto.

The equivalent ratio for 33s is 4.88. If you want more power go with the 5.13s, but IMO that might be a bit too low (high numerically).

Given that you are not dramatically increasing your tire diameter you can do either the tire or gear upgrade first.

However, don't set your expectations too high, the only way to "to be able to slam on the gas and really get that RAWR haul ass power" is to go with a major engine upgrade like a HEMI.

Better start looking into Hemi swaps if "haul ass power" is what you are looking for. A gear change won't get you there...

Bah, you beat me to it Spinlock...

x4....

I plan to get 33's in 2 weeks. Then saving up for 4.56 gears for use with either 33's or 35's. Look at the chart. Right now I have a 6spd with the gosh-awful 3.21s.

33 is not that big a jump from stock and (in my own opinion) its a waste of money to gear to 4.10. Put your tires on and drive it a bit and decide then. If you want to jump to a 35 or 37 then gearing is a mod you'll probably want. It really depends on what you want to do in future...35's or 37's or stay 33.
