When pulling someone out of a ditch, make sure..
So yesterday my wife and I were driving back from having lunch together and noticed a Toyota sedan of some type slide off into a ditch on the side of the road. Pretty bad, he even had mud jammed in his exhaust that had frozen (it had happened the night before and sat all night in the ditch). Lucky for him, he had dual exhaust pipes and the other was clear.
At any rate, he was slid off at such a bad angle and was low enough on gas that his car wouldn't even start. So, being the good Jeeper that I am I offer to yank him out. He and his buddies are more than grateful.
Long story short, I pull him out without any issue but as soon as I get him back on the road the dumbass was so happy to be back on solid ground that he forgot to hit the brake and coasted right into my ass.
Luckily no damage to me (tiny little scrape on my bumper) but put a nasty dent in his trunk. He didn't care though.
So just a friendly reminder, MAKE SURE the person you're pulling out is conscious enough to hit their brakes once they're free.

man you took a big chance.. where im from we dont pull ANYONE out that we dont know because of insurance stuff.. too many people here have been screwed over.. if somethin tears up on their car they will try to shaft you.. not that everyone is a tool bag lol.. but i cant risk mine for someone elses if i dont now them..
Good story.
When I pull someone out of a ditch I typically have them hook up the strap under my close supervision so that if something is damaged on their vehicle they are less likely to blame me or my technique. Anybody else know more about liability issues we might be getting into if we offer to recover a stuck vehicle and its damaged during the recovery?

Plus one on letting them hook up themselves. I usually tell them to call a wrecker. Then if they are desperate enough I pull them out. Generally around here (mostly sand) I won't let them have the engine running. I tell them to leave it in neutral and tell them where to steer. Just too many ignorant people that do not listen. A dangerous combination.
