Default Making the change from full size truck to JK...

Hi guys, been on this forum for a little while now, mostly lurking and admiring the great looking JKs.

Anyway, I've had a full size Dodge Ram 4x4 for nearly 20 years and over the last year I've really been wanting a JK. Lifted, 37's - the whole deal. In fact, I've always wanted to own a jeep... love the top and doors off for the warm weather...

However, I'm struggling with one thing... Will I get used to having a smaller vehicle. I plan to do some off roading, but this will be a daily driver too. And I'm wanting a JK 2dr Rubicon, not an unlimited. Although, with enough lift and tired the unlimiteds are pretty killer too.

I'm not worried about losing the cargo carrying capability, I'll just use my small utility trailer if I need to get lumber or whatever.

Have any of you guys made the leap from full size truck to Jeep? How do you like the change? Did it take a while to get used to?

Thanks for your input...

I can't really say I went from a full size truck to a JK, but I used to drive a Chevy S10 extra cab pick up. Now I have a 2dr Rubi and it took me a while getting used to driving a short wheel base vehicle. It was driving around in a go-kart. I can't even imagine going from a full size truck to a 2dr JK. It will be fun though. Driving around with no top and no doors is the best way to get around.

Yeah, I really want a JK... and every time I get on this site I see everyone's killer rigs... and Damn I want one!!

I just worry that I'll have a hard time adjusting to such a small vehicle... at least during the winter months, when the top has to be on... damn cold/snowy weather.

Have you sat in one of the JK's yet, they feel bigger on the inside than the TJ's did.

I drove full size trucks as my dd for years.I keep my 97 truck and retired it to hauling fire wood and other stuff and got an 07 4 door. I don't regret it on bit. The truck sits so much I have to make an effort just to keep the battery up. I have a soft top but the heat is so good it has not been a problem this winter. There is nothing better than top down doorless trips to work to start your day. I am thinking about getting rid of my truck and getting a trailer.

I traded my 2007 F-150 for a 2007 JK Unlimited Sahara 4x4. Seeing that you're thinking of going from a Quad Cab to a 2-Door, here's the first thing to consider - how often have you used your rear seats on the Quad Cab? If you have used it a lot, you'll be a lot happier with an Unlimited and 4 Full doors. If you haven't, then the 2-Door will be just fine. Going from a larger truck, especially the larger wheelbase to a smaller one takes some getting used to. My 2007 F-150 Regular Cab and the JK Unlimited had a wheelbase that were pretty close. But, even if it takes getting used to, for most people, it isn't a big deal. Now, if you were coming out of a Quad Cab with a Hemi going to the JK, you might be a little disappointed with the power [not that it cannot be fixed ].

But more importantly, at the first sign of nice warm weather, when the top and doors come off, I think any doubts you have about getting a JK goes away . If you've wanted one for so long, you owe it to yourself [as long as it's feasible] to get one. I know I'd wanted one for years and now that I have it, all I could think was - why didn't I do this sooner?

Yup, drove both a 2 and 4dr, auto and standard. really liked it, but it was a test drive... 15 minutes...

Very cool bro! Yeah, I have this vision in my head of driving around without the top and doors, pulling my standup jetski to the beach... doing some off roading... (not with the trailer... LOL)

My wife bought a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo... and it's frigging awesome!! I've been driving that more lately, as my wife doesn't like hiking up into my truck. So, I'm getting used to a smaller vehicle... I guess that's helping me out.

Man, it's snowing like hell here... guess I'll be back out in the plow truck again tonight... already logged 8 hours plowing over night.

I owned 2 full size Fords over the past 6 years. 3 years with a SuperCab; 3 years with a SuperCrew to accommodate 2 kids' seats. I now have an Unlimited and don't miss the truck. I have unlimited access to a 5x10 trailer, so I lost nothing in the transition.

I love my Jeep.

I battled with this same issue for 2 years. Last week I finally pulled the trigger and got an Unlimited Sport! I had a Nissan Titan crew cab 4x4 before. There is definitely a difference in size and power but I love the Jeep. It is kind of nice how much more manuverable the Jeep is in parking lots and such. I rarely used the full potential of my crew cab since it is just me, wifey and a 6yo son. She has an Armada that we normally take for family trips anyway. I may miss being able to just throw something in the back of the truck when I need to but I plan to get a small (6 x 12 or so) trailer for cutting wood and hauling my 4 wheeler around. It's only been a week but no regrets so far! And my Titan was LOADED with leather, heated seats, etc. Just can't wait for warmer weather to take of the top and doors!
