I just upgraded to 33's a month or two ago, and today the wife called from Virginia to say the spare was stolen right off the back of my JK.

She's working up in Richmond, Virginia, and has been taking the JK due to the weather, etc. The Wrangler was parked at her place of business, which is in a nice business park in Glen Allen.

I guess I should have "locked" it somehow...



She did a police report. But my insurance deductable of $500 doesn't make it worth a claim. Can I show this as a loss on my 2010 taxes??

 

Wheel locks! Just do a search for 'em... you can find them for around $20

 

Thats why I put a cover on it. Not that it won't get stolen but it gives the appearence that it is harder to take.

 

theres definitely a couple of threads like this, but i do the wheel locks and the cover... i feel like the cover is so damn annoying to take off by the time the reach the lock they'll give up.. i hope haha. If someone wants it bad enough, they'll get it, but im gonna make it harder!

 

I started this same thread a short while ago. Sucks wicked bad!!!! I bought 2 sets of gorilla locks 1 internal spline and 1 external spline. Much better than the factory locks. I have 2 locks on each wheel. If someone really wants to take it they will get it but the majority of would be thieves wont risk getting caught if it is going to take 25 min to get each wheel off. locks make it not worth the time nor the risk. What kind of wheels/tires did you have?

 

I had just gotten Goodyear DuraTracs (33x11.50) on my stock 18" Sahara wheels.

I'm thankful that all they took was the spare, but the tire was $260, and I have no idea what a replacement wheel will cost (and if I can find a matching stock one...)

 

Seems like one 33x11.5 Duratrac would be pretty tough to sell on the black market. I mean, how many people are looking for that exact tire, and then just one?

Sorry to hear about your spare. Just before I signed the papers to buy my JK, (literally I had the pen in hand) I made the sales manager throw in a Mopar locking gas cap (uses ignition key), Mopar wheel locks, and Mopar hood lock (also uses ignition key). Reluctantly, he did.

 

I just drilled a hole through the carrier and put a receiver hitch lock on it.
