No firsthand experience with this, but is there anyway you can put a pin on the latch somehow so it won't continue to open; at least until you resolve the issue.

I would contact smitty and get them to replace whatever is wrong with it though.

I rear that the latch thing wears down the metal that holds it closed and this is what happens.

look at where the latch thing fits into the tire carrier in the little C shaped cut out.

I hate this bumper I wish I didn't buy it. :(

Stick with it. I have had this bumper for a while. And I love it. I didn't have any problems with the handle until a little bit ago when it rusted shut. Literally. Anyway, Smittybilt stands behind the bumper and will fix any problems you have. I contacted Ray at Smittybilt and he sent me a new handle. It has been hassle free ever since. I'm sure you can figure out the issue you are having if you check out this thread:

IMO, it's a great bumper and tire carrier.

Ray at Smitty will help you out as previously mentioned. In my past experience I was sent any replacement part I needed. Smitty has never asked for a defective part to be returned, which makes it easy if you have a problem.

X2, this is a great bumper, I have had no problems at all with mine, no rattles, no latch issues

The rattle with the XRC is usually caused by the bumper hitting the rear corners of your tub/body when you travel over bumps. Install some washers in your body mounts and it will go away. Basically do a 1/8" or 1/4" body lift using washers.
