Default 4.10's or 4.88 looking for advice for what to install

I have an 07 JK unlimited..... at the time it was the cheapest Jeep on the lot..... came with 3.21 gears according to the build sheet.

I have done allot to it and now its time for gears.

Curious.....

I have a set of 4.10's from a friend for free or I can buy a set of 4.88's.....

Question is this.... with 35's is the 4.88's going to be " that much better" over the 4.10's that it would warrant paying for them when the 4.10's are free?

Jeep is a 6 speed.

Any recommendations or thoughts are welcome.

Also would like to hear from anyone that had 4.10's put on 35's and then went to 4.88's and your thoughts between the two gear sets and 35's......

99% of my driving is around the washington DC area with little side trips to GW national forest and Misty Mountain.......

Thanks if you can help with any info.........

I have 34in tires and 4.10's, I have to regear. No more OD and can't make highway speeds here in CO.(unless rev out) I'm gettin 5.13 in a week or so, waiting to get the gears in mail. I wouldn't waste my time on installing 4.10's. unless you want a learning experience.

Check the info and charts in the Drivetrain FAQ's. Then look at the other 10 current gearing threads for more opinions.

Are you doing the install yourself? There is a great write-up by BlackNorthern. If you are paying the labor, I'd skip the free 4.10's and gear back to a 'stock' power ratio. (35's with a manual, most are wanting 4.88's...)

Default 4.10 auto

My 07 came with 4.10's and I'm running 33's with an auto and it struggles maintaining highway speeds on hills. I've heard that 6 speeds aren't as bad but considering you're going with 35's I would go with the 4.88's.

You will be keeping the "Benjamins in the wallet" by going with 4.88s. Most of the cost of regearing is labor and if you have do it twice you will have to pay for the labor again (even if you are doing it yourself).

Guess its time to call Northridge and see if they can assist with selling me what I need......

Unless there is another site that can give good prices for gears and install kit
