What is the purpose of a disconnect and a sway bar? are they the same thing?

by disconnecting the sway bar your front wheels will have more travel than when connected. This will help keep wheels in contact with the ground in more extreme situations.
Lots of guys take out the bottom bolt on the sway bar link and ziptie them to the sway bar when wheeling then reconnect at the end of the day. Or push the swaybar disc button on your dash(if equiped)

When you disconnect the sway bar, it allows the wheels to extend further, keeping your wheels on the ground more often. It's dangerous at high speeds.

edit- sin 52 beat me to it. "A disconnect" is a quick disconnect pin that enables the bypass of the sway bay without the use of tools. The rubicon does it in an automated way (probably a servo/motor?).
