Default To the Guys with 3.73's and 35's

I am ready to pull the trigger on a 3" lift, and 35's but im back to the beginning of reading about how 3.73's suck and that the tranny is going to over heat and gas mileage is going to be about 10mpg.
I have an automatic (I know Boo to that) and I really have no plan on re-gearing.

Is this all true? What are you guys getting? My jeep is not my daily driver as I have a company vehicle so I drive it nights and weekends for trails and cruising.

Thanks

I just put on my 35's yesterday, and am running an auto as well...I immediately noticed that the shift point were off, especially with overdrive...I put a procal on last night so we will see...but mpg was indicating 15-16 yesterday on interstate....

I've been running 35's with 3.73s on an automatic for around 9 months.

Is it ideal? No, but it is completely livable. I've gotten into the habit of turning off overdrive for anyting other than around town slow driving.

I log all gas fillups, and have averaged 14.5 mpg since install. I'm easy on the skinny pedal though.

I will eventually regear, but feel no rush to do so.

with the OD off 3.73s works fine with 35s

go for it you wont regret it, just get a programmer such as AEV or superchips so that your tranny shift points change for the larger tire diameter

There are a million other threads on this (at least 75% of them suggesting regearing) for a reason...

It's livable, but you will more than likely want 5.13s, eventually, if you do anything other than drive around town a few miles a week... If you don't find yourself wanting them just b/c stock gears and 35s sucks, then drive in someones auto with 4.88, 5.13 gears and 35s, and then you will want them. LOL.

The 5.13s are the best mod I've done, I believe. Combined with the procal, highway driveability with 35s is MUCH better than it was with stock gears and stock tires even, let alone stock gears and 35s (unbearable IMO unless you turn off OD which while it does the trick - IMO is just silly if you can afford gearing).

I get around 15-15.5MPG city, and can get 17.5-18MPG highway if I just cruise it around 60-65MPH in cruise control. With 5.13s, my RPMs at 70MPH are in the 2450 range, which is higher than stock obviously, but also why it drives better. It's not sitting at 2000RPM where any slight incline or headwind causes the auto to constantly shift, shift, shift.

Stock gearing here and 35's. Interstate driving is a bit annoying but around town is fine. Pretty much anything under 55mph is fine. I do plan to re-gear eventually, but the 3.73's are doing fine for now. I am getting 14.5-15 mpg now and was getting 18-19 stock. But, I do only have 1500 miles on it so far. I have heard mileage will get slightly better with some miles on it.

But to answer your question, it is liveable, but if I had the extra $1k laying around, I would probably do gears. Maybe next year that's what I will do with some of my bonus.

just regear it! , everyone that I know who has gone up to 35's says it sooner or later. I'm planning on regearing in April when I move up to 35's.

I think the only thing I would regret is possibly getting 33's then wanting to go 35's shortly after. I would give the programmer a shot when I get some extra cash after the lift and tires.
Also I most likely will join the crowd eventually down the road that have 5.13's.
But for now I will just do the lift and tires then see how it is for myself and go from there.

Lots of hills around here so I never use OD, most of the time when in the city I shift into 2 and ride around, same thing for long freeway on ramps that are inclined..

I agree 3:73's are ok but not ideal for 35's unless you live where its really flat..

I have been running 3.73 w/35's with an auto for nearly a year, and it is very liveable. Ideal? No, but I can deal with it until I get other stuff (new bumpers etc..) I am getting about 15-16 Hwy, could probably get a little more If I drove more conservatively and about 12-13 in the city. Go for 35's without a doubt, dont let gearing get in the way IMO. Good luck
