Default 4.10 from a Rubicon in my X

May have front and rear 4.10 gear and pinion off a Rubicon for a great price. Would this be a useful upgrade? I have 285s and plan on keeping them for a while. I couldn't find the thread, but there's one detailing this kinda thing and info on determining what gears you might have based on vin#. Any input is great. Thanks

Cant run the 4.10s from the Rubi in the X because the Rubis have Dana 44s front and rear...you have a Dana 30 up front and Dana 44 in the rear. Rubi gears won't work.

The spline counts on the rears are different also, so don't think you could even use the rear gears out of a rubi.

Non-Rubi
30 front 27 spline
44 rear 30 spline

Rubi
44 front 30 spline
44 rear 32 spline

If you can find 4.10's from an X/Sahara, you could swap them in. For the install cost, you'd be better off just moving past 4.10's though...

Lets not forget labor cost. The hefty price of regearing is mostly labor.
It just isn't worth it to pay for all that labor only to gain a relatively insignificant upgrade from 3.21s or 3.73s to 4.10s If you're going to regear, go for 4.88s or 5.13s. IMO, this helps justify the labor cost.

lucky for me my step dad owns a 4x4 shop so I have tools and free labor, just time and the right parts is all I need. Thanks for the input, I'll be doing some more homework on the subject...

I would say that 3.21 to 4.10 is not a relatively insignificant increase. That's about the same as going from 4.10 to 5.13. I understand what you're trying to get at though...being that most people looking at regearing are doing so due to increased tire size, most commonly being 35" MT's....and some will try 33's at 4.10's and get tired of 33's and promptly move on to 35's which will now put them at a possible disadvantage if they only regeared to 4.10's...so that's where the consideration should be made.
Granted...4.88's provides a bit of play on either side of the fence.
But hey...if you can do the gearing yourself, no big deal

is this true?
i mean the gears shouldnt matter, isnt it justy the carrier that needs to worry about the d44,d30, the same gears should be able to bolt onto any carrier that fits.

im probably wrong but i dont have proof yet as to why

yes, you are wrong, they are not at all interchangeable...I should clarify...as stated, the front axle assembly in a Sahara or X is a Dana30, unlike a Rubicons front Dana44. They are entirely a different size, completely. The Rubicon rear 44's 4.10 gears would work just fine in an X or Sahara rear 44, but you still need a Dana30 specific front.

Even if you install 4.1 gears in an X or Sahara, the T.C. is still 2.72

Only the Rubicon has the 4.1 tranfert case. Much better off-road.
