I used Dupli-Color High Performance Wheel Coating in satin black with much success. I painted my wheels with it last fall and the paint has held up great all winter. Only took about 3 cans to paint 4 wheels with several coats each.

Can be purchased here among other places: summitracing.com/parts/SHW-HWP104/

A few more photos are in my gallery.

General rule of thumbs for spraypainting anything is the ensure the surface is clean of adhesives, oils, etc.

Also, it is generally a good idea to sand or wetsand the surface with some sandpaper to give the spraypaint something to 'grab' onto - I guesse adhere to - would be better language. LOL.

Try to paint it in a clean environment, somewhere without a ton of dust, etc. that could settle on the surface after coating it.

Use the right spraypaint, which in this case appears there is wheel-specific stuff you can use.

Good luck!

EDIT: Just so you are aware of all options, powdercoating generally yields great results, usually stronger than spraypaint, but is also more expensive to have done! As long as you don't mind coating the wheels every now and then, go with the paint, IMO.

I really wish I had a spare rubicon rim(s). I want to get them hard coated which would make them more durable and give them a nice dark gray color. However, having seen that satin black I might try that first. The graphite looks interesting too. Maybe mix it up, graphite for the face and satin black the rest.

Anyone want to donate a set of rubi rims to me for some experiments?

The thing about painting is, if you bugger it up, just strip it down and redo it? So experiment away, you can't really ruin them or anything... haha.

If I still had my stock wheels I'd probably paint them for fun just to make htem more marketable (even though I had no problem selling them stock color).

I had the rubi rim on my sahara before i lifted it an the rims were painted black. You can scuff the rims with the red scotch-brite pads, clean the dust with air. After that use a good cleaner like paint thinner, MEK or something similar to wipe the rest of the dust and dirt. I would tape everything off before you scuff. It came out great. if you scrape on a rock just scuff, clean and paint that area.

Best luck it will look great

i use Engine Enamel low gloss 4 cans for all 5 wheels.

Clean the surface, sand down, spray one coat of primere, allow to dry, then spray 2-3 coats of your deisred paint & allow to dry....

everyone one here just about uses the same methods to painting their wheels.
