Default Your opinion on Hand Winch (ARB)

I would like to get your opinion on a hand winch like the ARB model.
Is it worth having it?
easy to use?
I probably will never go off-road by myself, but there is always a chance and this seems like something good to have in addition to the tow strap and shackles...
Also I will probably never install a real winch. Doubt that my wife will let me...

Here is what I see from Quadratec:

Hand winch $225
Cable for winch $100
Handle for winch $25
Shear pin $2
Total for something that works: $352

OR

Smittybilt XRC8 Winch $299

I would just get the electric winch and save $50 for your next mod

True, Harbor Freight sells a universal one pretty cheap, there are a few write-ups here on the forum on how to mount it to the stock bumper. Still better than filling your cargo area with a bunch of stuff you hopefully will never need and breaking your back if you do. Besides winches make these jeeps look like... jeeps!!

I have an electric winch and still carry a come along and have used it 3x already. It is good for keeping from a side slide into a tree on an off-camber hill etc. I am actually looking to upgrade to a beefier one.

i think if you want to get a hand winch, just get one from the hardware store. probably cheaper than the ARB, or anything else made for off road specific apps.

Agreed - a come along is a good thing to pack in your tool bag. Habor Feight has them for $30.00 or something and they can come in very handy. Like pully out your buddies quad behind you.....

good thing to have just incase the winch craps out. not really comparible to a winch as you could never pull 8000lbs with a come-a-long.
