Default Getting new tires and maybe rims - some input needed !

I am new to this forum and have a JK needing new tires. Been searching various posts to figure out what tires/wheels to get - looking to upgrade from the OEM 255/75/17 to 285/70R17 D Kumho Road Ventures and had a few final issues to work out
1. will they work with my stock 17 rims (I know from the sticky that they are 7.5 wide with 6 inch backspacing) ?
2. will they rub without a lift and spacers ? My own conclusion from having read other posts (and the FAQ sticky) is that they won't
3. If I did change out rims I would go with something traditional like a Cragar Soft 8 in chrome or black (I have a white X model) - The specs on these per Cragars site are 17x8 5x4.5 (bolt pattern) and 4 1/2 (backspacing, which they call "rear spacing") - would these work without spacers ?
4. Are steel wheels so much heavier than alloy to the point that they affect performance ? I have the 3.73 gearing.

My general goal is to get a beefier (33s or close), slightly custom look without spacers or a lift. I'm grateful for any feedback on these questions !
Pete

thanks for that info ! I realized I needed the 5x5 bolt pattern after I posted. That Jeep looks great. The tires look huge compared to my OEM 255s. If I went to the 17X8 rims (4.5 backspacing), I'd still get rubbing at full lock ? And that's because of the width of the tire, not the backspacing ?
I'm still so confused, especially since the FAQs mentions that some are running 33s with "no rubbing" ( I guess that means WITH spacers ?)
Any further guidance most appreciated
