Default Shifter boot mod for clearence after body lift

OK so I just finished installing a Daystar 1" body lift and was wondering what exectly is the best way clearence the shifter boot. For the time being I've just lifted off the insulating boot on the body the one below the interior boot. First off how do you remove the shiter nob? The instructions say to trim the boot, well no kidding , anyone done this?
