LOD rear bumper/tire carrier - slight damage in shipment and a little bit of rust.
Hey guys. I finally received my rear bumper and tire carrier today. The boxes were pretty badly damaged during shipment, so I took pictures "just in case" there was damage to the contents (the FedEx guy said the packing job was pretty bad).
Fortunately, the damage appears to be minor -- two fingernail size chips in the tire carrier, and then a 3" long rub mark on the rear bumper where it must have come in contact with the crate. Also, the huge pin on which the tire carrier swings has rust all around it.
I took some pictures (attached). The rust doesn't show up very well, but I think it's fairly easy to see the damage.
I'm a bit surprised, but not sure what to think/do. I imagine I will have scratches at some point in the future, but is it unreasonable to want it perfect at time of delivery? Should I just polish off the rust, file down the chipped metal, and get a can of Rustoleum to touch up the paint?

UPS is the worse one but couriers bang the packages around pretty bad. However Lod warehouse needs to put more care in packaging and that is not acceptable. That is disappointing to see and I was thinking about getting rear bumper from them. Imagine having to mail a damaged bumper back? what a PITA
LOD bumpers are generally well-respected on this site, but there seem to be increasing reports of quality problems. The packaging is disappointing, but the rust is genuinely concerning. I hope these are isolated incidents or, if not, that LOD can get a handle on these issues.
I agree that the packing should have been better. The rear bumper was in a crate, which was pretty bad@ss, but the tire carrier was in a box that got really mangled.
Dave at Northridge (highly recommended BTW) got back to us and we're going to look into touch-up paint. Shipping it back and getting it re-done would be a huge PITA ... and I need to finish all my mods before the Baja500 (San Felipe) on 6/4. Running against a timeline here.
I'm still going to buy a bunch of stuff from Northridge -- including the LOD front bumper, rock sliders, jerry cant mounts, and trail rack -- but I really hope LOD packages the next shipments better!

P.S. the rear bumper has less scratches than the rest of the Jeep anyway haha.

That really sux. I would call and ask for a price adjustment. Someone is going to absorb the loss. It should not be you. More than likely they will file a claim with the shipper, recoup some money, and be able to discount the bumper to you. It would be less expensive then shipping a new one to you and also having to ship back the damaged one. I would go for the discount instead of a new one b/c knowing me I would bang it up eventually. But that’s just me. Good luck to ya
