Default question on rims and tires

i know its possible to mount a tire that has a recommended rim width of 11-12-13 on to a narrower rim but what are the repercussion of that? my buddy has 20x9 rims and he wants to buy 40" nitto grapplers when we checked out the site minimum recomended rim width was 11 and max was 13. i don't know what to tell him i said it might make the tires stand lil taller but how bad is this for the tire ect....?¿? I really don't know what to tell him

That is good to a point. For example my 35's recommend a min of 8.5 width. I went with 8 so when I air down the chance of slipping a bead would be less. I would check to see what the guys running 40's are doing and see what they like.
