Default Breaking Period over

Ok I did my 500 miles for my gear break in. I would normally take this to the guy who installed my gears but he is being a prick now. So I was planning on using 75W 140 gear oil Mobil One synthetic. the front needs 2.1 pints which one quart will cover. The rear needs 4.75 pints which is about 2.25 quarts. My question is can I get away with just 2 quarts in the back. I asked cause that crap is not cheap. But I also understand spending the extra to play it safe. Just thought I would see what you guys thought.

Regardless I bet they'll be full with 3 quarts, but buy the forth. If it bothers you to have another quart around, return it
nope does not bother me. Just got to get the found from the wife that is why I was asking if the fourth was needed. Rather be safe then sorry.

I would say "get it anyways" too, but at the same time, my rear was leaking so I re-sealed it with a lube-locker and put new fluid it it....D44, no locker...I couldn't get any more than 2 quarts in. Actually, I got about 1.9 quarts in and it started coming back out the filler hole. I plugged it, rolled'er down the driveway with the engine off (to coat the gears in oil) then tried to add more....just kept spillin' out. I don't know how...other than to fill it through the vent hose, to get the "2.38 quarts" in there.

Default 2 Quarts

When I changed mine it took slightly less than spec. One thing to remember is that when changing the oil it is impossible to get all the oil out from the axle tubes and bearings with out a disassemble, so some remains in the housing. hopefully that helps explain why it usually doesn't take the full amount.

Did you jack your Jeep up (by the frame) to do the fluid change? If so, when the axle moves away from the frame, the diff angles rearwards, meaning that the fill hole is lower, meaninig that it won't hold as much.

Alternatively, if you have a lift, this will happen even without jacking it up.
