Default Any replace the JK alternator with a GM Alternator (Premier Power Welder)

I still have my old Premier Power Welder that was installed in my old XJ.

Does anyone know of a way to install the GM alternator in the JK either as a second alternator or replacing the factory alternator?

Thanks,
Rob

I'm in the same situation. Had the premier power welder in my XJ, took it out so I could put it in my JK. I got in contact with premier and they said they were having trouble getting a kit together for the JK's. Then they said the engenier is ready to move forward and just needed a JK. I dropped my JK off with him over 4 months ago. It seems to be an electrical nightmare! My advise to you is hold off until they finish working out all the bugs with mine. You could damage your electronics. I will do a full writeup on the premier power welder as soon as I get my Jeep back.

It's an electrical nightmare because the JK alternator has no voltage regulator in it.
The voltage regulator is in the Powertrain Control Module.

Adding the welding alternator as a separate accessory would be easier.

Thanks,
I guess I will start researching the possibility of two alternators unless they come out with something soon.

Please keep me posted o n the progress.

Thanks,
Rob

An idea just popped into my head for you:

Because adding another device to the serpentine belt system isn't a cake-walk, maybe research how Kilby adds their air compressor to the system and mimic it for the alt? Maybe even get the bracket and stuff a-la-carte from them to modify for the alt?

Some quick research for you from kilbyenterprises .com

Their air kit is part# KE2200-K. The mounting kit, with brackets and idler, is KE2200.

Good luck!

I started thinking the same thing but I wasn't even sure that Kilby had the brackets. Those brackets look like they may work with a generator conversion bracket or maybe even some "L" brackets I have laying around.

I will let you know what I find out.

Mean Green makes a drop in replacement for the stock alternator that pushes over 200 amps. I started looking into it since I have a 1000 watt Amp for my subs plus an overkill Carputer and I'm looking to do a dual batt. set-up that I want to be able to recharge pretty quickly. Just a thought. You could also look at a dual batt. setup as well which would give you the power for a welder if you run deep-cycle batt's.

I read that and said, great!. Simple, easy, drop in. That must mean they make one for the JK, since this is a JK site.

I happily and excitedly Googled Mean Green, and went to their site.
Navigated to the page where they list all the Jeep applications.
Found the list for applicable Wranglers. This is looking better all the time.
Looked at YJ, then TJ.
Huh? No JK?
Why not?

Maybe because the JK alternator is controlled by the PCM, and is not self contained like all the rest of the alternators in the world!

That's what I thought too. I got a hold of Mean Green and said WTF? Turns out it's a 1388. Here's some links. Just delete the quotes.
