Default Nitto Terra Grappler vs Yokohama MT+

I have two very different tires sitting in my garage due to trades ect. . .

one Nitto Terra Grappler
one Yokohama MT+

both 305/70R16

I drive 50 miles a day for work and go wheeling (big bear) every three months or so.

Which set should I buy three more of?

The Yokohama's are directional, may not be the best choice for a 50+ mile per day daily driver. And the fact that you only off-road 4 times per year is another point in favor of a less aggressive tire.

(and on a personal note, I just think the yokohama is a fugly tire... )

Assuming I'm looking at the right one, of course...

Don't you mean buy 4 more of? Spare Spare spare.

I have the AT's and they did awesome at the snowshoe jamboree in slick mud and rock. Quiet on the road and balance and wear good.

I actually think the Geolandar is a reasonably cool looking tire, but a guy who ran them told me tread wear is a problem, they're apparently quite soft.

The better question is, with admittedly less unique but imminently more R&D'd choices from the big players, e.g. BF Goodrich, Goodyear, etc., why fool around with these obscure brands?

No flame, just a question.

That'd be nice, if true. However, most the time you are paying for the "BFG" and "Goodyear" on the side of the tire and the design and materials are no better than the lesser known brands. Capitalism at its best.

Can't comment on any other sizes, but for my 16" wheels, I got the Terra Grapplers for $50 less per tire than the less aggressive BFG AT. And when I moved up to 35's, I got Maxxis Bighorns for $100 less per tire than either the KM2 or MTR/K. Reviews on the bighorns are great, so for someone on a budget, why would I choose to spend an extra $500 for a name??

Not picking fights on tire marques.

I know less than nothing about Maxxis tires.

My comment was directed @ the Geolandar and based on a guy who spent (if I recall correctly) in the high $300s per tire for 35x12.50s; they chunked in the rocks and wore poorly on the street.

Your cash, your decision. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Thanks for the input! I was going to run the Yokohama as my spare. Looks like my nittos are the choice for me.

I agree that a tire is a tire, however there is a reason bfg and gooyear have been around forever. With that said, I am poor like everyonelse so I am gonna make what I got work.

Thanks for the help

you should put pricing into your consideration....pm one of our vendors (discount tire direct) I think

I just picked up a set of 38" geolanders for what I'd expect to pay for 33"s....and these tires came recommended in another post by 'Wayalife' himself. He said "for the price they are a decent tire"...just not happy about the 'directional' aspect of them and tire wear/rotation

for me....it was a cost thing....and I couldn't justify paying TWICE as much for the namebrands that I've always gone with. These tires will get a fair review from me once they go on....as I've had many, many different namebrand M/T tires and have used them all in various ways

Default Love My Nitto's

I love my Nitto Terra Grapplers--i drive about 35 miles each way to work & go to Rausch for some medium action off roading and i really like my TGs. They did great this past winter with all the brutal snow & ice. i've got about 25,000 miles on 'em and they're holding up really well. they're 285/75/16s on black cragar soft 8s. got a great deal from discount tire direct on 'em.

i keep 'em about 30 PSI on the street, about 15 PSI off road.

i don't claim to be an expert on rubber--hell, this is my first jeep & first tire purchase, just very happy with my product.
