Default Yakima SpareTime Bike Carrier

Has anyone installed and used this product? I have a 35 inch spare tire and a rack that plugs into the receiver hitch. Even though the rack will pivot back down it won't pivot low enough to open the tailgate all the way. That is the part I don't like about it. That and the fact that I had to add an extension to the receiver hitch to clear the tire which causes the rack to stick WAY out behind the jeep.

The Yakima SpareTime carrier looks like it would allow you to open the tailgate even with a bike on. One minor issue is that it would completely obscure the third brake light.

If anyone has this carrier I'd like to know what you think about it.

Are you still using the stock tire carrier? I would be worried about having a 35" tire + bikes on mine. Even with my 33" KM2s it feels a little heavy for the stock tailgate.

I have the yakima spare tire mount rack, it comes with three different shafts to accomodate different size tires. I also have 35's and it fits fine. I like it because it can be installed/removed quickly and allows your bikes to lock to it. I didn't want to use my reciever hitch to mount a bike rack since I would be using that for a camper trailer.

I have the yakima and it's great.
I also have a Saris Batwing that I had on for a while, but it wouldn't work with my full suspension bike. It's for sale for cheap if you're interested.

I have AEV rear bumper and tire carrier. The bike is not much added weight.

I just jumped on to check out bike racks and had the same one in mind. I have 35's also with a LOD bumper and tire carrier.
Any pictures available?

I installed mine tonight. Cell phone camera does not have flash so no pics yet. The unit is sturdy and I like it but the mounting plate did not fit over the bolts on my tire carrier. I had to file the pre-drilled holes a bit. Also, the instructions indicated that you should use the long tongue if you have a 12.5 inch tire. When I used the long tongue the unit did not fit flush against the tire. When I used the medium length tongue it worked fine. I have not hauled my bike yet but I think this is going to be much much better than the hitch mount rack I had. With the prior hitch mount my bike was five feet behind the jeep and I felt like I needed to remove the bike carrier for clearance every time I left the pavement. It also made me nervous to leave the bike on in a parking lot. With the bike on the jeep and bike barely fit in a standard size parking space. I don't see a need to remove this unit and parking in a parking lot with the bike mounted will not make me nervous. You can also fully open the tailgate.
