ride quality
"Improves" is very subjective. I feel that my Rough Country 3.25" lift improved the ride of my Jeep, but I can also find you dozens of people who will say the R/C lifts ride like @$$, everyone has different ideas of what the ride should be like.
In general, look for a lift with track bars front and rear. Depending on how high you go, you will also want control arms to help bring the alignement back into spec (to improve ride quality).
Shocks and springs will probably play the biggest role in "around town" driving. If you are looking for a smooth ride, I'd stear clear of any shocks or springs label as "heavy duty" as they tend to be rougher.
Again, just my 2-cents
