Default My turn at building Rock Rails

After I almost nailed the bottom part of my door on some rocks one day while out testing my bumper I realized I needed some rock rails in a very bad way. So, instead of buying them I decided to build my own. Here are a few pics, let me know what you guys think.

And so it begins:

Mounting plates:

Mounts taking shape:

Bottom rail completed on drivers side:

Test fit of top rail:

Almost done:

Test fitting supports:

Primer:

Bedlined and installed:

It's hard to see the rails in this pic, but it shows the mods I have done to the jeep in the last few weeks:

Hey guys, I am having a terrible time with the web hosting service I use and pictures coming thru. I posted 10 pics, if for some reason you don't see 10 please let me know.

Nice job! I like how they tuck along the sides.

Yeah very nicely done, did you use a tube bender or any kind?

Yea, I used the tube bender from Harber Freight. The bends didn't come out like I wanted but I think I was using it on the wrong setting. I am going to try a few more bends before I make a decision if it sucks or not..

Those look good I helped a buddy of mine build a couple of sets of rails, after doing it I know now why companies charge what they do, and I can better appreciate anyone who builds their own stuff.

Do they just mount using existing bolts on the frame? Do you have any pictures of how they are mounted? My buddy just welded his on, but seeing other options for how they are mounted would be cool.

Nice job. Did you get tubing or pipe for the rails? Those bends are definitely crimped, but I doubt that you'll have any problems with such close supports welded in between the parallel bars.

Boy you aint liein! The mounts were a pain in the ass to make and get right. They bolt on using the existing body mounting bolts. The primer pic shows the mounts pretty good. I will snap a few pics of how they are mounted on the Jeep though. The large hole in the center is so they can slip over the large washer in the center of the mounting location.

There won't be any issues out of strength. It's 2" tubing. I think I was using the bender on the wrong setting. The rails are .125 thich walls. Even with the crimp they look good for a home job.

Turned out great man, youve been pretty busy our in that garage lately havent you? first a bumper now this, very nice, my jeep is most home made mods too so I can definitely appreciate the amount of time you spent out there. I like the look, thats the kind I wanted but with a lot of short people getting in and out, I figured more of a step-like one would be better. Keep up the good work, whats the next project?

P.S. All ten pictures are there
