chrysler and it comes free with your jeep.

seriously, i've been hammering on my factory gas tank skid for 3 years now and, while it looks pretty beat, it still does the job just fine.

Just curious, Why?? If you do a search on this topic you'll find lots of info. When the factury skid gets too beat up, I just drop it and pound out the dents. Repaint reinstall and good to go. Untill the next time of course.

No one on the forum has posted up with a tank puncture or significant loss of tank volume that couldn't be fixed by pounding out the dents.

I didn't even think about the fact that the skid is removable

I guess I need to drop mine and take care of some of that rust sometime soon

Yup, takes about 45 minutes to pull the tank. Do it with the tank as empty as possible and know that with the skid comes the tank. The front of the tank sits above the cross member so you can remove the skid from the front to the back. That way you just use blocks under the rear of the fuel tank while you do your hammer repair to the skid. I do this without removing any of the electrical or fill lines from the tank. Just be careful not to drop the tank to low and put pressure on the connections.

The Rock hard and the stock skid plate are totally different. The Rockhard is very rigid and will protect very well, but it is very heavy and cost money. The stock one is a type that has some give to it and absorbs the shock, it doesn’t weigh as much and it is free.

Default funny--just thining about this

when we were crawling around under my jeep putting my lift on, we noticed my gas tank skid had a watermelon sized dent in it--

i was wondering what it would take to pound it out?

so i understand, the front of the tank is supported by the crossmember, the rear just sits on the skid? so if i lower the rear skid, the tank will drop with it?

it's just a few bolts to remove the skid?

With the fuel tank as empty as possible. Place a floor jack under the rear portion of the skid. Remove the bolts. Lower the jack about 3-4". Check the wiring, fill and vapor tubing at the rear of the tank to make sure there not stressed. Gently pull down on the front of the skid, this will get you a space between the tank and the skid. You can then use arm strong to hold the tank while you lower the jack and skid or you can place a 2x4 block between the tank and skid over the jack and then lower the jack some more. Keep adding blocks untill you have enough leverage to hold the tank up while you remove the skid. Then place some blocks under the tank to hold it up while you use a BFH to remove the dents. It's easier to do than it is to explain.
