I know this point ha been treated a lot in the forum before. I have been reading the threads for months and I know most people recommend 5:13 for auto 4 drs. The main thing is I live in Houston, Texas which is very flat, (no hills at all). I drive 90% of the time in highway 65-70 mph, 1 hour driving to go work and 1 hour back home. Some times winds are strong here. Would you guys still recommend me with my driving go with 5:13 or I should go with 4:88. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have the feeling 5:13 will be to short for everyday but I will go with your experiences and advice. I will be installing my lift kit, gears and tires next week. I will be running BFGoodrich 35's KM2.

I have 3:73's and it did ok until I lifted it and put 35's on, now it falls on it's face going up hill and with strong winds not to mention it kicks in and out of overdrive constantly, i am installing 5:13's in a few weeks. Most people with autos go with the 5:13's and the 6 speed people go with the 4:88's. There is a chart on one of the threads here

The most popular setup for 35's Auto is 5.13's ........ 35's Manual 4.88

 

and 5.38's with people that have automatics and the rubicon models.

 

Being as you live at sea level and have no hills to climb you may get by with 5.13s. If you have a Rubicon 5.38s would still be acceptable. I would not go with 4.88s.

 

5.13s all the way. It is flat where I live too and they have made the Jeep way more responsive, got OD back, and it drives better than stock. Even got some mpgs back as well.

 

jpjk2009, where are you going to get the gears installed? Once I finish saving up for wheels/tires/gears I plan on heading to H-town to get the work done, the gears anyway....

 

When you go with 5.38’s you stand a greater chance of breaking your gears. The Rubicon has a 4-1 transfer case so why would you go with a shorter gear on a Rubicon? I have a Rubicon with auto and 35’s and I’m going with the 4.88. I would say it is about 50-50 between the 4.88 and the 5.13’s.

 

clearly statistical. PLEASE, go with 4.88's and tell us how you like them.

 

This is the first I've read of someone suggesting 5.38's for Rubicons. What would be the difference? I agree with Red Dog at least in the point of 5.13's. With the 4-1 transfer case, slow crawling wouldn't be an issue so why the 5.38's?
