265/75/16 on stock steelies now or save up for 285s with aftermarket wheels?
Hi all,
I looking for some opionons on the above.
What would you do and why?
Keep in mind I do have a very limited budget, that's the reason for wanting to keep the steelies.
Thanks in advance.

265's fit great on stock 16x7 steelies. No rubbing, even disco'd, without spacers. 285's will rub a little without spacers. They're also taller, of course, which makes your stock gearing seem even worse, but it will probably be bearable.
I put my 265 MT's on as an interim step to get me by until I learned what my Jeep could do, and what I wanted to do with it. It's my first Jeep and I didn't know diddly. Still don't know much... 265/75-16 is approximately the same size as Rubicon 255/75-17's so it's a good choice if you don't want to do anything else to your Jeep for a while. The dealer can even reflash your ECM so that your speedo is right since they're about stock Rubi height.
Now, 7 months after I bought my Jeep, it has a whopping 4000 miles on it, new gears, and a little more suspension. I'm a fender cut away from fitting 35's and I have new wheels waiting in the basement. The tires I'm getting won't be available 'til next month.
Here is my avatar pic...stock everything except for Treadwright 265's.

Thanks for the replies so far fellas!
I've been debating this for awhile now. I've seen mixed opinions on whether 285s fit stock steelies.
I know I'm sick of the stock 225s and have been reluctant to do much offroading because of them

I have 315/75/16 (35's) on stock steelies they fit perfect. Just added spidertrax spacers. Would have ordered the black rock steelies but they didn't have 16 inch rims with 4.5 inch backspacing so I kept stock and I'm glad I did!!!!
Wow! those look great!
I thought you couldn't mount anything that large on 7" rims?
So, 285s should fit then? I don't see the point of buying another set of steelies just to mount these

Ive got 285's on my X (17's) and they look great. get a set of spacers and the 285's. IMHO it fills out the wheel wells nicely and gives the JK a nice stout look. 285's all the way, if you go smaller chances are you will regret it.
Unless you want to move down to 15'' wheels, keep the steel wheels. If you can take a slight hit to MPG, get the 285 tires. I just moved up to that size and I love it, although I get 15.5 mpg average.
