Default Stock Carrier Help!

Not sure if this is the right location for this, but here goes!

I have yet to get a proper spare tire (still rockin' the stocker)
I have decided to go ahead and buy it. The thing is, how well will my stock tire carrier hold up to a 35x11.50 duratrac? i don't want to bend the tailgate...

I know i'm taking a risk by doing this, i'm saving for a tire carrier now tho.

Opinions and solutions would be awesome

thanks guys!

fairly sure that if you roll with the 35 you will break/crack the plastic. I have a 36 and fairly heavy wheel. I was TOLD to not use the stock carrier by the local shop. I have a full spare but removed the stock carrier housing all together.

So where do you have the spare? Any pics?

I had my 35 inch spare on the back for a little over a year, but the tailgate started rattling recently. I am keeping the spare in the back of my jeep until i get a new bumper with carrier.

I think a lot of people, including myself, use the stock tailgate tire carrier for larger tires....if at least for a temproary solution. I haven't had any problems with it thus far. My tires are heavy...35x12.5" Toyo MT's. By choice I would have a bumper with a tire carrier on it though, but can't afford it right now....soon. I would just check it every once in a while to make sure there are no cracks or damage or anything like that.

^^ I'm not as heavy, but yes, check it and don't assume it will be good forever either. I don't let my tailgate hang open for long - - unlike some friends that I've seen let it hang open for a few hours! I take mine off when wheeling. Personally, I think you would be ok if you're cautious until you save enough for a carrier.

I have taken mine off of the tail gate. It just sits in the back of the jeep. Laying flat on the floor in some tire shop bags.

I tried using the stock carrier for my 35x12.5r17 KM2 and wasn't comfortable with the amount of rattle and movement I was getting from it. I've been driving with the spare in the back of the Jeep for a couple of weeks. Getting the OR-Fab tire carrier installed today.

I figured spending the money on a tire carrier now is a lot less than having to buy a new tailgate + carrier later.

People worry about tailgate damage but the hinge pins will fail first. My stock 32 wore out my pins. Haven't had a spare in there for 6 months. I just toss it in the back.

My 255/85/16 BFG MT (33.1") is mounted on the stock tailgate with no probs at all. That said, 33 has got to be the tallest tyre you can use before you need to extend or replace your third brake light...My 33" fits perfectly but anything higher would obscure it.
