Ready to give back my Goodyear Duratracs
Put 17" AEV Pintlers with 32" Duratracs on my new Sahara 2010 Unlimited last April. I use the Jeep as a DD 99% of the time, the rest is forest service type roads for camping, etc. No real off-road use (I know, heresy).
Anyway, I chose the Duratracs because I had read nothing but positive reviews on the Jeep forums, I love how they look, and Goodyear gave them a good snow rating.
I've had them for 8K miles now and I'm a bit frustrated with them. Discount Tire can't get them balanced, despite repeated attempts, including road force/dynamic balancing. They swapped one tire for a new one at my 5K rotation because it "failed" their balancing attempts. Prior to that, I had a terrible steering wheel shimmy at 55 mph. After repeated balancing attempts and replacement of the tire, the 55 mph shimmy was eliminated but now I have a (slighter) vibration at 43 mph! DT is basically saying that this is the nature of the beast with an aggressive tire like the Duratrac.
Secondly, the tire noise on concrete highways is pretty significant! I knew there would be some tire hum, and I know this is subjective, but it's much louder than I was expecting. Enough to be annoying.
At this point, DT is willing to take them back for 50% credit toward a new set of AT tires. Because of the cyber monday rebates, I placed an order for a set of Michelin LTX AT2s. Certainly not the look of the Duratracs, but I'm hoping they will perform better for mostly on-road use.
I have until the weekend to cancel if I change my mind. Just thought I'd throw this out there to see if anyone has had similar experiences.
Thanks,
Steve
