Default Or-Fab Tire Carrier Question

Does anyone know if that "locking bar" looking piece that comes out from the middle of your spare is necessary. Is it possible to remove that bar to do a license plate relocation? I love the look of the carrier but not that bar.

Default sorta--

you sorta need that bar to rest the tire on while you thread that t-bar on..one the t-bar is threaded, the pressure that the t-bar puts on the silver metal disc is what holds the tire on the carrier.

maybe you can shorten the locking bar??

Oh ok. I couldn't tell from the pictures I could find if that bar was what actually held the tire on. It seems like finding a way to mount a plate holder to that bar would be pretty simple.

You could VERY easily just zip tire your plate right onto the bar. Wouldn't go anywhere.

True. Cheap and effective.

You could also have someone fab a mounting place so you simply bolt the tire on instead of using the T handle.

that's exactly what i was thinking. instead of using the T-bar just have someone weld on a spare relocation bracket.

I would not recommend this at all. Another guy broke his OR-Fab Carrier from doing that by not using it correctly... Why fab something up and take all that time/expense when a 1 minute zip tie works.

I am thinking of getting this carrier as well. My plate will have to stay in the stock location. The license plate light is a wonderful way to get pulled over out here. If I moved it, I would also have to light it up. It may be easier to do than I think, but until I see one in person I am planning on leaving the plate alone.

Zip ties would work but the plate wouldn't be very sturdy. I would probably go the way of some simple hose type clamps.
