Default 2.5 lift want shocks. How much longer shocks can I go?

I have a 2.5 lift (without shocks)and was looking at getting shocks. How much longer shocks has people gone or should I go? I was looking at getting shocks that are for 3-4 inch of lift. Would that be ok?

since you have the RC 2.5, why not just get their shocks that are made for their coils? i think most shocks are going to be for a 2.5-3" lift and then 4-6". you'll want the 2.5"-3". check out the teraflex shocks, if you are against the RC's. northridge has a good TF sale right now.

if you install shocks that are too long, you will not have any up travel and you will bottom them out and damage them. you need to run shocks designed for the amount of lift you have.

And on the other end... at full extension you could lose your coils unless you have some sort of coil retainer or limiting strap in place ...

So is it better to run with shocks that are slightly shorter than what you need? What are the disadvantages then? For example, running stock height shocks on a levelling kit.

Yes I understand that. But I think a lot of people run levelling kits without changing the shocks. What are the disadvantages?

I bought lower rear retainer's. Should you run with lowers and uppers? Wouldn't that make more sense to have no movement from the coil? Almost everywhere I look they only have lower's but not uppers. Is there anyone out there running uppers and lowers for front and rear?????

Also I looked for Limiting straps and cant find them. are they just like nylon straps that get bolted into the coil area that gos under or over the coil to hold it in? Could I just use 1 1/2 nylon strap (like a tow or ratchet strap) and bolt it in to the frame somewhere? Anyone done this?

I didn't think the Teraflex levelling kits came with shock extenders. I could be wrong.

I could see the ratchet strap idea working for the spring retainer. You would need to reinforce the bolt hole area.

So would self tapping screws work with a big washer? Or would I have to drill a hole and weld in a nut for better hold? For the ratchet strap idea?
