Default tire width vs wheel / rim width? 15x8

Hey guys, I have a technical question about tire width vs wheel width.

What is the max wheel (rim) width vs tire width you can run? I've heard 5.5 difference from your wheel (rim) size to the actual tires width.
More precisely will 14.5 or 15.5 wide tires fit on 15x8 wheels (rims) and what are the variables (airing them down, wear on tread, road feel, daily driving, etc..) that you would factor in. I've even heard this is an alternative to bead locks but I don't understand the technical know-how behind that.

I've personally seen 15x8 with 35x14.50s on them, would this really be ok on the road?

Thanks.

I run 17x8 on my 37x13.50 Toyo M/T with no problems on and offroad.
I probably wouldn't run anything wider than a 14.50 though.

Why do you say that Aba? I'm trying to learn the technical behind the wheel vs tire width thing.

Will they fit on the rims? Yes

A better question would be - Can you find a tire shop that will actually mount them? Those rims are several inches narrower than the tire mfg's recommendation, so many shops will not.

It's just personal preference. There's pros and cons to running both and there's a few topics about it floating around somewhere on the forum.

Thanks nthinuf. That's exactly what this thread is about, I didn't consider that part that finding a shop to mount them would be a problem.

To this i need more details. The reason for posts like mine is to understand the pros and cons, and I've tried to search. If you can point me were to go that would be great, if not...

Thanks

wide tire with narrow wheel -
pros: holds bead better while aired down
cons: crowning if not inflated correctly

wide tire with wide wheel -
pros: better road manners
cons: prevents airing down as much offroad

There's no right or wrong way, just personal preference. hope this helps.

I agree totally with this statement. I have 15x8 with 12.50" wide tires and the combo works great for on and off road. I usually wheel at 8-10 psi depending on the condition and have never rolled a tire off the rim.

On the other hand I wheeled with a guy that had 10" rims and 12.50" tire and he rolled two off in one day running 12psi vs my 8psi.

Also a side note I run 32 psi on the street and have a very even tread wear 35k on KM2's and I'm not that good at rotating the tires but I do rotate the spare in.
