NNeed regearing and lockers - what should I go with?
So I just lifted my JK Sahara 4 plus inches and put on 37" Toyo M/Ts. I now have no power and no MPG left. My question is what gearing ratio should I re-gear to? And what type or brand of lockers should I go with. I will probably go to EVO for their $999.99 re-gearing special and thought that while they are in there I should probably install some lockers while I'm at it. That way I can save on future labor costs. My only problem is that I am on a real limited budget, so I need to keep the costs down as much as possible. any suggestions?
being that you're here in socal and i would imagine that you will be playing with your jeep hard, i might recommend going with a set of 5.13's and arb lockers. 5.38 is a good ratio for 37's but, the pinion gets to be real small and for the kind of trails we have out here, i personally think it's better to stay on the safe side. i've gone this route on my orange jk and have been more than happy with it.
With a sahara, you have a front D30. 5.38's are not an option. You have an auto, so 5.13's are what you want. As noted above, if you like to get stupid in the rocks, pinion size is a concern. If that is the case, then you might consider 4.88. On the plus side, auto's are less harsh on the axles/gears than manuals, so factor that in.
You say you are on a budget, but you didn't give any numbers. Can you afford selectables? Do you trust that front 30 enough to lock it? What is your opinion of manual lockers in the front? Since you are in Cali, and on a budget, you might consider an Aussie up front. If you don't want a full locker, consider a TrueTrac. For selectables, look at ARB or the eaton elocker.
For the rear, it is hard to beat a Detroit, or a TrueTrac if you don't do a lot of wheels in the air crawling. ARB would be the best choice for a selectable. Or with a little extra work, you can get a cheap lunchbox in there.
Also consider having some axle upgrades done when those gears/lockers go in. C Gussets at a minimum, but wouldn't hurt to have some sleeves dropped in as well.
