1st trail damage,, tape is your friend
All repair bags need Duct Tape,,
tape is your friend...
Got my first trail damage today... in the Rio Puerco...
Very interesting too.
First a little history,,, I have skid plated the underneath about as good as I can think of.. here's what I have done,,,
Riddler Custom Diff Covers
Skids - RR Sway skid, Poison Spider EVAP skid,
Rock Hard Oilpan/Transmission/catalyic convertor
gas tank skid.. stock... with dents..
So what happen? I ripped my front drive shaft boot, at the front collar, and put a small dent next to a bolt on the transmission pan... Yes it's got a skid plate.. so the rock had to angle up under the skid... yea not much of a dent but it ripped the boot pretty good... which you can't skid plate....you just got to know it's there...
I didn't get a picture of it in the field,,,,
.... I didn't even think of it until after I did my repair. The only reason I knew something was wrong was because the clamp didn't snap off so it was making noise while moving.. if it had come off I would have all kinds of dirt, sand, rocks in there...
I don't really have a picture of what I was going over,,, other then this one.. it's a ridge with some tire ruts and lots of sand and I didn't get enough traction to get over, and I of course slide on the bottom... skid plate probably helped prevent other damage.. here is a picture my friend Dave trying to get over the ridge,,, 4" lift longer wheel base,, so about the same reaction... bottom out with not enough traction..

Here is a pic of my repair in my garage.

so there is a hose clamp the holds this boot on and it was thankfully reusable. the tear wasn't to bad about 2 inches and didn't go to far into the baffled area,,, luckily Dave had some Duct tape and I was able to get the hose clamp back on,,, not a user friendly hose clamp... and taped it back up, sealing out the sand, etc,,, and keeping in the grease.. this was early in the day,, 30mins so we finished the day and now I have added two hose clamps to my repair bag... the kind you can use a screw driver on.... and of course my duct tape that was setting in the garage is in the tool bag.
will be repairing this sometime this week...
edit,, I think this was meant for the Trails and Tales cat..

A rock did not hit your drive shaft, you drive shaft made contact with your automatic transmission. There are several threads on this issue.....under extreme articulation the drive shaft will contact the transmission causing the problem you experienced. The fix is to replace the front drive shaft. However, some of the people on this forum have continued to run the stock drive shafts until they fail......I opted to replace mine because I did not want to damage my tranny.......new shaft is about 500.00.

also if the stock drive shaft would damage the tranny even under extreme articulation I think that would be under warranty...
of course I have heard those horror stories... warranty ones that is..
thanks for posting..

my JK is shown on my Avatar...
ok so I have read a little about how the Front Drive shaft hits .... I am going to try and see it.... most the problems occurred after 4+ inches of lift... I have a 2.5" lift.
but I did read someone with that size lift had the problem...
mod one thing and turn around and mod another to fix the fix mod.......

edit,
I'm looking at this one.,

so I also read that you can't replace the boot... that would be hard to believe...
