Default Detroit noslip locker install???

I'm fixing to do a install, I have never done one but bought all the tools and a press to do it with, instead of removing old bearings I got new ones so all I should have to do is press these on, my question is have anyone else here done a Detroit and not gears, do I need to redo and backlash, thanks for your help

Yes you will, since the locker replaces the whole carrier. Also, you'll have to drill the locker holes out bigger for your ring gear bolts.

You're mixing your products. There is no product called a Detroit No-Slip.

There is a Detroit Locker (which for a 14B GM is also known as a No-Spin).
The is also a PowerTrax No-Slip (which is also a locker).

What do you have?

It's called a Detroit nospin locker, it is the full case replacement model 187SLSorry for the misprint, it says no machining necessary, I have 5:13 gears but Detroit said I had to use the smaller case, I spoke with them for 30 min about this and ordered directly from them

Who did you order it from?

You should have to drill your case.

just did mine. i had to drill out the bolt holes but it was allot softer metal then i thought it would be. install went easy as backlash was about .0055 with the same shim setup i had and the pattern looked good. mine was 187sl 16D

Since you're not doing new gears, matching your old backlash is crucial. You must check your existing backlash before you pull out the old carrier. When installing the new locker you'll then match the backlash you had on the old carrier. Even being off a couple of thousands will cause premature gear wear. I've seen gears destroyed after 5K when differing backlash was used.

If I can jump in here and ask a question...what is the hole size on the detroit originally before drilling it? I believe the ring gear holes are 7/16-24. I also assume the drilling is required for a detoit TT right?
