Really want to put a lift and 35's on and regear down the road. I keep hearing you can't because your tranny will cook and some say it's fine as long as you don't wheel the hell out of it and turn off O/D. So that being said please post if you have 3.73's and 35's. The good, bad and ugly of it all. Thanks

 

I ran this for over a year with no issues. Now I am on 37's and no issues...yet.

 

I ran heavy 35s on 3.73s and an auto for 2 years, no major issues. Like you said, just turn O/D off on the highway, it won't keep speed in OD and will constantly downshift. On the trail you find yourself using the skinny pedal more too, but its doable. Go for it, no regrets here. Love my 5.13s now though

 

Regardless of running bigger tires, a tranny cooler is a good thing. Consider putting one on!!

There is a good RPM chart in the drivetrain faq's, spend a few minutes plugging numbers into it. Once you get your rpm's at 70, divide that number by .69 for OD Off. You will find that 35's and 3.73's with od off, is very similar to 35's with 5.13's/5.38's with od on.

 

I did it and I suppose it's tolerable, but I hated the gas mileage and no overdrive on the highway. I added a B&M transmission oil cooler (thanks to this site) so I could do a better job of protecting my investment and then about a month ago, I regeared to 5.13s. It really is the way to go.

If you are tight on mod money, go ahead and get the lift and 35's. You will really like the result. But try to save quickly for the regear as it will make your Jeep much more usuable everyday. It is hard to "see" the money you spend on a regear so I bought an ARB differential cover to remind me what I did...

 

I have no complaints/issues with this set up.

 

Well so far so good, if everyone could state how long they have run this set up that would great. That way I know if it's 3 yrs with nothing bad happening it makes me feel better lol. Some guys may have only run it with 3.73's and 35's for 6 months and that really does not tell me anything. Thanks everyone for posting.

 

I have been running 35's on 3.73's for a little under two years. My jeep is my daily driver. With a Superchips Flashpaq, it works fine. I average about 16 mpg with mostly street drivng. It feels a little underpowered up steep hills, but it isn't the end of the world. Obviously regearing would be ideal, but I am fine without.

 

I ran that setup for 3 years, wheeled the hell out of it, and even trailered a deckover with two atv's and never had an issue. No oil cooler and only saw the tranny temp warning one time.

 

Going on 3 years myself. Would love to regear but I really can't complain too much. Only really noticed the lack of gearing when going up a really steep and loose hill while wheeling...definitely struggled. I average about 14.5 - 15.2 mpg's.
