Default Can I take my fuel tank skid plate off, while keeping the car drivable?

Hi, just back from a jungle trip and just noticed that I have damaged my fuel tank skid plate, not to mention that there is no paint on it anymore.

So I want to take of the fuel tank skid plate and bracket going across, does the fuel tank has separate brackets ? or will it come off when I take the skid plate off?

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Mark

I could be wrong, but I kind of remember reading on here that the skid actually holds the tank. So I guess the answer to your question would be no. And when you say that you damaged it, what do you mean? If it just has a couple big dents in it, then you should be OK. Anyone that wheels a lot has a gas tank skid with a bunch of dents in it. Nothing to worry about unless you punctured the skid.

The tank will come down with the skid plate. Then you can seperate them.

It's a trick question....

You can remove the gas tank completely on your Jeep and your Car will still be drivable!

Thank you for your comments guys, great help !

Just a couple of big dents in the skid plate, no piercing though just dents.

The reason I want to take the skid plate of is that I want to galvanise and repaint the skid plate. My jungle/mud trip stripped all the paint of my skid plates. Just took the skid plate off protecting the exhaust, OK this one is very much bent so I need to get it reshaped again.

So I guess if I take the fuel tank skid plate off I take the fuel tank off as well, bummer as I want to have it painted, let me have a think

Any suggestions? can I strap the fuel tank to the chassis temp? do you think by taking the skid plate off, exhaust skid plate and cross section I make the chassis unstable? (I am not taking the cross chassis member off) just to skid plates.

Any thoughts would be welcome !

Best regards

Mark

Just jack the jeep up, get under there and clean and paint it with rustoleum or POR15.

Much cheaper, dries quick.

If you are going to pull it off every time you scratch it up, you won't have any money left for fuel.

Hi my friend,

You are very right.........indeed I just should paint it as it is....probably the best way forward. Just amazing how mud can basically strip the paint of your underside. OK indeed I'll paint it.

Great !

Best regards,

Mark
