When buying new wheels and tires do you purchase a 5th?
I'm assuming you do but it adds quite a bit to the price. What are others doing? I've also seen pics of some who have the original tire's on the back but it looks weird to me.
I did. If you switch out a flat, you need to have the same size spare as you have running on the ground. If not, you could mess up your gears. It doesn't necessarily need to be the same tire, just the same diameter.

1) Buy 5 new tires and do a 5 tire rotation. This theory will allow you to use your spare like a normal tire with fear of any problems with the traction control system. Drawback - More costly
2) Keep the fifth tire brand new. Then on the next set, you only have to buy 3 tires. Drawbacks - May experience traction control issues when using a new tire with used tires. And you have to buy the same size tires.

I would. If you are going up in size what would you do if you get a puncture or flat? I don't think jeeps are designed to run on a smaller spare.
The only rationale for not doing it is that you can't afford a 5th. In which case, worst case scenario u buy 4 and get a puncture and you still can't afford a 5th so now what do you do?

The best option, if you can afford it, is to get 5 new tires and wheels and do a 5 wheel rotation as stated above. This allows for you to replace a flat and gain extra life out of your tires. If you plan on wheeling, I'd say that it is pretty much required to have a full size spare. If I am leading the trail ride, I would require it.
if you wheel your jeep, yes, i would definitely get a 5th. if price is an issue, call around to some of your local tire shops and see if they have a take off of the same size you can buy. i have been able to find some for as low as $25 and so long as it fit your factory wheel, you can just have it installed on it. the tread may not be all that great but, all it needs to do is get you off the trail and hopefully home

Yep, i went with 5. You never know when youll need it. Hate to ruin a week long trip of wheelin if you get a flat in the middle of the week and have to put some little spare on, that might slow down the rest of the week or might send you on your way home. Thats my two pesos........
I wasn't gonna buy a 5th but I wound up having to. I worked out a deal at purchase time for the dealer to buy my OEM wheels/tires and he wanted all 5. So I purchased 5 new wheels/tires. I plan to do a 5 tire rotation. When this set of tires wear out I'll have to make the decision whether to buy 5 new ones or just 4.
